Island Yacht Club

Island Yacht Club hosted its first regatta for sailing competition in 1956 and quickly established itself as one of the finest bases for excellence in the sport. The Junior Club, formed in 1958, is a specialized camp for young sailors. It has produced generations of competent and skilled boaters, many of whom compete at the highest levels of regional, national and international competition.

The Club's first Olympians represented Canada at the 1960 Olympic games in Rome, a tradition that has been maintained throughout the decades. More adventurous members have flown the club burgee across different navigable bodies of water around the world from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from the Adriatic to the Caribbean. In 2004, the Club supported Canadian Derek Hatfield in his quest to conquer the world in the Around Alone Race, as well as the Club's own young sailors who competed for Canada at the World Optimist Championship in Europe and at the sites of many other international competitions.

Island Yacht Club is the proud recipient of the Canadian Yachting Association 2004 Recreational Award for hosting the Starlight Starbright Family Fun Day, a community charity event organized by and held annually at the Club since 2001.

Weekly organized competitions are held in Toronto Harbour on Monday evenings. Commonly, two races are completed each Club race night. Boats compete over a one to two mile course, attempting to maximize their speed, anticipate changes in the direction and intensity of the wind and maneuver their boat strategically on the race course.

Whether it be for a day, a weekend or a 10 days, cruising at IYC offers the unique opportunity to partake in adventures that are not only fun and exciting in destination, but also extremely gratifying in terms of the social camaraderie that develops between all those involved. Club boats travel together in fleets to prearranged destinations where overnight stays and social activities are organized in advance. With a safety net of radio communications and check-ins, we encourage participation by less experienced sailors in a shared and fun experience. Throughout the year, the Club hosts lectures from experienced cruisers that include safety afloat information, medical information, knots and splicing, etc. There are 4 or 5 organized cruises each year. Popular day or weekend destinations include Bluffer's Park, Port Credit, Port Dalhousie, Oakville, Cobourg, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
