Proposal for wind farm on lake is shelved

An ambitious plan for what was to be the nation’s first freshwater wind farm with as many as 150 large turbines in Lake Erie off Buffalo’s shoreline is being halted, a state lawmaker with firsthand knowledge said Thursday.

Curtain rises on new Port of Rochester plans

A revised plan to redevelop the Port of Rochester increases potential building heights, preserves more parking than previously envisioned and adds boat slips at a new marina.

"It's a fairly heavy lift," said Mark Gregor, the city's port development manager, explaining that the first phase of construction could be done by 2015, at the earliest. "We believe this will become not only a place for people in the Rochester area to keep their boats but also a destination."

16-year-old girl, Laura Dekker, completes solo trip around the world

Devil's Nose was a 'graveyard of ships'
More than two centuries ago, early in the development of commercial sailing, a particularly bad spot for shipwrecks was located a few miles west of Rochester at what today is Hamlin Beach State Park, then known as “Devil’s Nose.”

Harvesting the future: Wolfe Island's wind energy
Wolfe Island is a sleepy agricultural community in the Thousand Islands region on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. In 2009, the 48 sq. mile island became host to an 86-turbine wind farm, the second largest wind energy project in Canada. Owned and operated by TransAlta, the Alberta based oil company, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power 75,000 homes a year.
