Name: Ken Palmer CommentsThe following e-mail is from a want-to-be sailor. It is always a thrill to help out new sailors. Hi Ken...thank you for the reply and info. Sorry for not writing sooner but we had plenty of company for the holidays and just getting back to our normal routine. I loved your story and appreciate your passion for the sport. I did go to the library, and there are so many books available on "how to sail" Browsing thru the mat'l, I doubt I could learn to sail from that. Actually my new son in laws folks are sailors and keep their boat moored at the Toronto Island Marina. I know they would love to have us sail with them, and it could work. My ad on Kijiji for a swap/trade for my MGB has rec'd a lot of attention. There are Tanzer's 26ft., C&C 27ft. Catalina 29, Chrysler 25ft. and another? Not sure now if the trade/swap was a good idea, or just selling my MGB and buying a boat out right is the better way to go. Anyway, it looks like my dream of becoming a sailing couple looks better and better. Even for the first while using the boat as our cottage on water could be fun and different, and I'm sure folks around a club would be more than eager to teach this sport! As a mechanical designer and my years of detail, I look forward to the mechanics of sailing. I'm going to the library again and just to find a good book on sailing experiences such as yours. Thanks again for your time and look forward to speaking and sharing stories in the future. Have a good day Ken. Cheers, Ron Name: Pat Pytlak CommentsWell, here it September already. We took Ken's advice and purchased an S2 8.0 in May, and have been having the time of our lives learning to sail and just playing with her. She is a very forgiving vessel for us "Newbies". GYC has welcomed us with open arms and we have enjoyed basic sailing lessons, crewing in races, and many social events so far, not to mention just "hanging out on the porch" with folks. I only wish we'd found sailing sooner! Name: Ken Palmer CommentsPat, Once the sailing bug has bit, it stays for a very long time. My suggestion is that you act on it by looking closely at purchasing a used sailboat. The prices are right with the economy down, so you can get a good deal from one of Rochester's local sailboat brokers. Ruth and I started with a 1978 28 foot sailboat, bought used for a couple thousand dollars. We took sailing lessons in Florida over the winter. When the sailing season started on Lake Ontario, we headed out on our own. We even ventured into Canada with no problems. As time went on, we up-sized to a used 1981 Hunter 33. I am a member of the Genesee Yacht Club. We are a self-help club without the restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis court, and hired help. The cost is low and the new friends are plentiful. You can volunteer to crew on one of the sailboats, held every Tuesday night. Please feel free to attend one of the meetings, held every first Thursday of the month except for July (no meeting). You can drop me a note on the "Contact" page of this website and I will be happy to answer any specific questions you have. Name: Pat Pytlak CommentsHello, fellow sailors! I'm so happy to find this site! My husband, Paul, and I took lessons at RYC last summer (earned our US sailing cards)and fell in love with sailing. We've been told it's a mistake to run out and buy a boat right away, but I'm itching for it pretty bad right now (April). I would appreciate any advice on getting started, finding ways to get more experience and confidence. We've been thinking about joining one of the local yacht clubs and drooling over boats for sale. We are in our early 50's and both pretty active and fit--looking for things to do now that our nest is emptying out. We'd welcome opportunities to crew in the coming season, and any advice. Name: John Shipley CommentsIt really is good of you to take the time to help me with the information needed for my novel. John Shipley Bridgnorth Shropshire England Name: Al CommentsI was showing your web site to people today and all the great info on it. If ever we get our web site up to speed we will certainly provide a link to it. Name: Spitzbub CommentsNice photos...especially "Ernie" Name: Doris CommentsWe are in Ithaca and are planning to take our Tayana 37 (new to us) to Lake Ontario for a couple of weeks in August. Your site was a great find. Very helpful, easy to navigate. Thank you. Name: Jean CommentsI just discovered your site...very nice! I'm new to sailing (don't own...am learning to crew), and it was nice to find a well-designed and easy to navigate (pun intended) and locally focused place to look around. Name: Ken Palmer CommentsWell, it is September 2. The rain is falling and the wind is blowing, and I just published my newest website. What do you think of it? |
